US-China Trade War Opens Export Opportunities For Russian Manufacturers - AmCham

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) Mutual trade tariffs introduced by the United States and China open new export opportunities for Russian manufacturers, President and CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia (AmCham) Alexis Rodzianko told Sputnik on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, China introduced 25 percent tariffs on the US imports worth $16 billion just a minute after Washington imposed 25 percent duties on the same value of the Chinese goods.

"Russian manufacturers definitely have new opportunities for exports, especially for agricultural goods, for example, soy ... If tariffs are unilateral, they create an impetus to search for new trade partners and contractors for the purchase of these goods. It is possible, but not always at once," Rodzianko said.

The US-China trade dispute started several months ago as US President Donald Trump announced tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in order to fix the US trade deficit with China, caused by the fact that import from China largely exceeded US export. In early July, Washington imposed 25 percent tariffs on the imports of additional 818 Chinese items worth $34 billion, China responded with the same measure.

The Chinese authorities have stated on numerous occasions that the trade dispute should be resolved through negotiations, stressing that the tensions between the two countries were fueled by Washington.
