Pompeo, UK Foreign Secretary Discuss In Washington Anti-IS Campaign, Russia - State Dept.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt discussed during a meeting in Washington, DC a range of issues, including the ongoing efforts to defeat the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia) as well as the threat posed by Russia, Department of State spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a release on Wednesday.

"They discussed a number of global issues, including the ongoing threat posed by Russias dangerous and destabilizing activity and Irans malign behavior, the defeat ISIS [Islamic State] campaign, as well as the humanitarian situation in Yemen," Nauert said.

Nauert explained the two officials committed to deepening cooperation on security and foreign policy issues and welcomed the prospect of a future free trade agreement.

After the meeting, Pompeo and Hunt thanked US diplomats expelled by Russia in response to the actions taken by both countries after the alleged Skripals poisoning case in Salisbury, England.

Hunt is visiting Washington, DC for the first time in his capacity as Foreign Secretary.

On Tuesday, Hunt called for tougher sanctions by the international community against Russia in response to the Skripals poisoning case.

On March 4, Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found unconscious on a bench at a shopping center in Salisbury. The United Kingdom and its allies accused Russia of having orchestrated the attack with what UK experts claim was the A234 nerve agent, albeit without presenting any proof.

Russia has repeatedly denied being involved in the attack on the Skripals and has pointed out the United Kingdoms refusal to cooperate in investigating the incident as per international law.
