WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) A Canadian Major-General will lead the new North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Mission Iraq, the alliance said in a press release on Wednesday.
"Canadas Department of National Defence announced on Wednesday (22 August 2018) that Major-General Dany Fortin has been selected to lead the new NATO Mission Iraq," the release said.
NATO said the goal of the mission is to prevent the re-emergence of the Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) and other terrorist groups by training Iraqi forces.
This non-combat mission will also involve setting up military schools� in Iraq, in order to increase the troops' professionalism, the release added.
NATO launched Mission Iraq at the Brussels Summit in July.
