Pompeo Must Reject Trump Plan To Drastically Cut US Refugee Admissions - Lawmakers

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo must reject the Trump administrations plan to cut the annual cap on refugee admissions by as much as 60,000, Senator Chris Murphy and five other lawmakers said in a letter.

"We urge you to honor the United States long tradition of resettling the worlds most vulnerable refugees in communities nationwide by resettling at least 75,000 refugees in Fiscal Year 2019," the letter addressed to Pompeo said on Tuesday.

The White Houses reported plan to cap refugee admissions at 15,000 in 2019 would be the lowest since the program was started in 1980, the letter added.

The lawmakers said they were also concerned about reports that US President Donald Trump wanted to move the bureau that handles refugee admissions program outside the State Department and into another agency.

In the midst of the largest refugee crisis in modern history, the United States must not turn its back on the worlds most vulnerable with cruel policies that will restrict refugee resettlement and undermine American diplomatic engagement, the lawmakers said in the letter.
