MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) Microsofts Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) executed last week a court order and disrupted six domains created by the Fancy Bears hack team, which could have been used to carry out cyberattacks to influence the upcoming US midterm elections scheduled for November, the company said in a press release on Tuesday.

"Last week, Microsofts Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) successfully executed a court order to disrupt and transfer control of six internet domains created by a group widely associated with the Russian government and known as Strontium, or alternatively Fancy Bear or APT28 ... Were concerned that these and other attempts pose security threats to a broadening array of groups connected with both American political parties in the run-up to the 2018 elections," the press release said.

According to the company, some of the blocked domains were made to look like the domains of the US International Republican Institute and the Hudson Institute think tanks.

The Fancy Bear group is thought to be linked to Russia by a number of states, however, these claims have never been proven. The group is best known for its attacks on the US Democratic National Committee and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
