US Rights Groups Sue State Of Arizona Over Voting Rights Violations

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in a press release said it joined a coalition of rights groups in a lawsuit against Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan for allegedly violating the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA).

"Secretary Reagan is failing to ensure that Arizona voters addresses are updated in accordance with Federal Motor Voter requirements," the release said on Monday. "The NVRA requires states to update voters registration addresses when there is a drivers license address change, unless the voter opts out of updating their voter registration address. This is not happening in Arizona."

The release said Arizona continues to violate the Voter Registration Act of 1993 which was meant to increase the number of registered voters and maintain accurate voter registration rolls.

The voting rights groups notified Reagan about the violations in November 2017 and informed her how they harm voter participation by low-income citizens and minorities in Arizona, the release said.

The lawsuit was filed by the League of Women Voters of Arizona, Mi Familia Vota education Fund, and Promise Arizona, the release said. The ACLU, the ACLU of Arizona, Demos, and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law are representing the organizations in court, the release added.
