Ukrainian Prosecutor Proposes To Kidnap Former President Yanukovych From Russia

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) The prosecutor in the case of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Ruslan Kravchenko, said Monday that Kiev should create a special unit to kidnap the ex-president from Russia and deliver him to Ukraine to serve a sentence if he is found guilty of state treason.

The prosecution has asked a Kiev court to sentence Yanukovych to 15 years in prison on treason charges.

"I believe that law enforcement agencies should do everything to ensure that this decision [the possible verdict] is enforced, possibly to create a unit like the Mossad, for example, so that the intelligence forces entered the territory of Russia and brought him [Yanukovych] to Ukraine," Kravchenko told the Hromadske.tv broadcaster.

The prosecutor believes that Yanukovych deserves life sentence, but the prosecution did not have the right to ask for it.

"The law has no retroactive effect, therefore we have no right to ask for life imprisonment, because the prosecution considers March 1, 2014, the day when the crime was committed. If life sentence was possible - I or Maxim [other prosecutor in the case] would ask for it," Kravchenko said.

In late June, the court began a merits review in Yanukovych's case. The former president was overthrown in 2014 by what many consider to be a coup and is currently in exile in Russia. The self-exiled politician has denied any wrongdoing.
