Leader of Ukrainian Nationalist Organization Wants to Run in 2019 Presidential Election

The leader of the far-right Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) Battalion, Mykola Kokhanivsky, wants to run in 2019 presidential election in Ukraine and forms a campaign headquarters, the organization said in a statement on Friday.

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) The leader of the far-right Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) Battalion, Mykola Kokhanivsky, wants to run in 2019 presidential election in Ukraine and forms a campaign headquarters, the organization said in a statement on Friday.

In fall 2017, Ukrainian police detained Kokhanivsky after a brawl with shooting in Kiev. During a court session on the election of a preventive measure, a clash broke out, and the police used gas against the nationalists supporting Kokhanivsky. As a result of the clash between radicals with law enforcement officers, several journalists were injured. The damage to the court building was estimated at $19,000. Kokhanivsky was placed under house arrest.

"An order has been issued on organizational and personnel appointments concerning the formation of the headquarters and election campaign of presidential candidate Mykola Mykolayovich Kokhanivsky," the OUN Battalion said.

The statement said that all units of the organization are obliged to take an active part in the election campaign and follow the orders of the headquarters. Kokhanivsky appointed Vladislav Shevchuk as head of the campaign.

The OUN Battalion was established in 2014 as a volunteer armed battalion, whose members took part in the Donbas conflict on Kiev's side. The organization claims to inherit political traditions of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, which was active from late 1920s to 1950s.
