The Ukrainian armed forces violated the ceasefire in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) 19 times over the past week, acting head of the LPR Peoples Militia Mikhail Filiponenko said on Friday.

LUHANSK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) The Ukrainian armed forces violated the ceasefire in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) 19 times over the past week, acting head of the LPR Peoples Militia Mikhail Filiponenko said on Friday.

"Over the past week, Ukrainian security forces violated the ceasefire regime 19 times, firing 427 shells at the republic," Filiponenko said at a briefing.

He added that the Ukrainian security forces fired at militia positions in the vicinity of eight settlements. According to the LPR militia, Kiev forces fired from 122-millimeter artillery, 120- and 82- millimeter mortars, armored vehicles' armament, grenade launchers, large-caliber and small arms.

As a result of the shelling, a school in the settlement of Donetskyi was damaged, the official said.

One LPR serviceman was killed last week due to shelling, Filiponenko said.

The conflict in Donbas started in 2014, when Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics that refused to recognize the new government in Kiev that came to power after what they considered to be a coup. Since the start of the conflict there have been several ceasefires in the crisis-torn region, but non of them stopped the violence.
