Over Half of Moscow Residents Interested in City's Mayoral Election - Poll

The majority of Moscow residents are interested in the upcoming election of the Russian capital's mayor, with over 40 percent having confirmed their intention to go to the polls on September 9, a survey carried out by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) revealed on Friday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) The majority of Moscow residents are interested in the upcoming election of the Russian capital's mayor, with over 40 percent having confirmed their intention to go to the polls on September 9, a survey carried out by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) revealed on Friday.

"The majority of the city's residents (52 percent) state that they are interested in the election," the poll said.

As many as 42 percent of those surveyed said that they were not really interested in the mayoral election, while 8 percent could not give a definitive response.

Moreover, the poll found that 41 percent of respondents would definitely vote, while 21 percent said that they were only likely to do so. Twenty percent of Moscow residents said that they would decide on their participation closer to the date, while 11 percent ruled out voting entirely.

The survey, carried out by VTsIOM, also suggested that acting Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who is seeking re-election, might receive as much as 65 percent of vote.

The Moscow election commission has registered a total of five mayoral candidates.
