Head of Italys Liguria Requests State of Emergency After Genoa Bridge Collapse

Giovanni Toti, the head of the Italian northwestern Liguria region, on Wednesday asked the central authorities to introduce the state of emergency in the region after the deadly collapse of a bridge in the city of Genoa, local media reported.

Toti filed the request at a local center of the Italian civil defense service in the presence of its head, Angelo Borrelli.

The bridge collapse took place during a storm at about 11:36 a.m. local time (09:36 GMT) on Tuesday. A 200-meter (656-foot) section of the bridge fell from the height of 100 meters on the warehouses, railway tracks, and a river.

According to the latest reports, at least 39 people died in the incident. Search and rescue operations are underway.
