UK Labor Shortage Down to Issues 'More Complex' Than Brexit - Think Tank

The alleged labor shortages across the United Kingdom are down to a number of complex factors, which cannot be confined only to fears coming out of the country exiting the European Union, Piers Moore-Edie, the head of digital at CompanyDebt, a London-based insolvency advice service, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) The alleged labor shortages across the United Kingdom are down to a number of complex factors, which cannot be confined only to fears coming out of the country exiting the European Union, Piers Moore-Edie, the head of digital at CompanyDebt, a London-based insolvency advice service, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said in its report that despite the fact that the United Kingdom as a whole was experiencing "continuing high employment," the country's businesses were suffering a "supply shock" over a lack of skilled workers from the European Union.

"Clearly, Brexit is affecting business at both ends of the spectrum, as indicated by the second largest rise in business failures of any major global economy this year ... Highly skilled workers, who might have come here as economic migrants, are choosing alternatives as we loom closer to a no-deal Brexit. Fruit farmers are suffering because of the governments refusal to implement a seasonal agricultural workers scheme. Add to that the fact [that] our unemployment has recently hit a forty-two-year low means that while Brexit is easy to label as the villain here, the situation is more complex," Moore-Edie stated.

The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, with the negotiations between the two parties expected to last until March 29, 2019. The two sides' main concerns include the scheme for future economic cooperation and the status of the UK nationals living in the European Union and vice versa. The fears of a no-deal Brexit have been mounting after EU Chief Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier rejected some of London's trade proposals.
