Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev expressed on Tuesday condolences to his Italian counterpart Giuseppe Conte over the collapse of a span of the motorway bridge in Genoa, which claimed the lives of at least 35 people.

The actual death toll is likely to rise as the rescue workers continue the search for victims in the debris.

"On behalf of the Russian government and me personally, allow me to express my deepest condolences over the numerous victims of the highway bridge collapse near Genoa. Please, send my regards to the families of the deceased and wishes of speedy recovery to the injured," Medvedev said in a statement.

The tragedy took place during a storm at about 11 a.m. local time (09:00 GMT). The affected span fell from the height of about 100 meters on the warehouses and railway tracks.
