DRC Begins Using Experimental Drug in Bid to Curb Ebola Epidemic - Health Ministry

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has started using experimental medication to treat people infected with the Ebola virus disease, the DRC Health Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has started using experimental medication to treat people infected with the Ebola virus disease, the DRC Health Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Mab 114 [vaccine], developed during Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe's research on serum taken from a survivor of 1995 Ebola epidemic in [the DRC city of] Kikwit, became the first [antibody] against the virus to be used to curb the active Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo," the ministry was quoted as saying by the Actualite.cd news portal.

According to the news outlet, during the country's previous Ebola epidemic, which broke out in May, the DRC Health Ministry approved the use of another four experimental drugs apart from Mab 114, to treat the virus, but none of them were used because the epidemic had ended quickly.

On August 1, the DRC Ministry of Public Health declared the beginning of a new Ebola outbreak in the countrys Ituri and North Kivu provinces. This is the 10th Ebola outbreak the DRC has faced in 42 years, and the second one declared this year. Earlier on Tuesday, the DRC Health Ministry reported about 57 registered Ebola cases in the country.
