German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to visit Azerbaijan on August 25 in a bid to drive existing bilateral relations forward, Azeri Foreign Ministry's spokesman Khikmet Gadzhiyev told Sputnik on Tuesday.
BAKU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to visit Azerbaijan on August 25 in a bid to drive existing bilateral relations forward, Azeri Foreign Ministry's spokesman Khikmet Gadzhiyev told Sputnik on Tuesday.
"Merkel's visit to Azerbaijan is scheduled for August 25. This visit is aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation � Baku and Berlin have friendly relations that are based on mutual understanding and mutually beneficial cooperation. We hope that the visit will give impetus to the expansion of bilateral ties," he said.
Gadzhiyev added that the visit had been in the works on both sides for some time.
Merkel is also expected to visit Georgia on August 23-24, the Georgian 1TV channel reported, citing the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
"We have recently held talks with our German partners. I have paid one of my first official visits to Berlin. Germany supports Georgias integration into European and Euro-Atlantic entities, and this visit [Merkel's] is very important given the challenges our country is facing," Georgian Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani said, as cited by 1TV.
The final date for Merkels visit is to be set by the German Embassy, according to the media outlet.
