Turkish Airlines Joins Boycott of Advertisements Promoting US Companies - Spokesman

The Turkish Airlines has joined the boycott of advertisements promoting the US companies in Turkey with the company's advertising agencies already prepared for the changes, the company's spokesman Yahya Ustun said on Tuesday.

ANKARA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) The Turkish Airlines has joined the boycott of advertisements promoting the US companies in Turkey with the company's advertising agencies already prepared for the changes, the company's spokesman Yahya Ustun said on Tuesday.

Turkish internet users have been calling for the boycott of the US advertisements since Monday sharing the hashtag #ABDyeReklamVerme, which translates to "Don't use US advertisements," following the recent deterioration in the relations between Ankara and Washington.

"#ABDyeReklamVerme Turskish Airlines are with our state and people. Our [advertising] agencies have been given the necessary instructions," Ustun said via his official Twitter feed.

The tensions between the two countries escalated after US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States would increase import tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum to 50 and 20 percent respectively. Following Trump's decision, the Turkish lira fell to its record low against the US Dollar on Sunday night nosediving to 7.13 lire for the US dollar.

On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Washington of an "economic attack" announcing that the country would boycott electronic goods from the United States.

The bilateral relations initially soured in 2016 after US pastor Andrew Brunson was arrested in Turkey for allegedly being a member of the movement founded by Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, which Ankara accused of trying to overthrow the government in 2016 and listed as a terrorist organization.
