Fifty-nine residents of the Syrian city of Idlib, including 17 children, have reportedly been killed after an explosion in an ammunition depot on Sunday, United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) Fifty-nine residents of the Syrian city of Idlib, including 17 children, have reportedly been killed after an explosion in an ammunition depot on Sunday, United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Monday.

"Yesterday, at least 59 civilians were reportedly killed, 17 of them children, when weapons and ammunition depot exploded in the residential area ... in northern Idlib governorate," Haq told reporters.

A total of 434 people reportedly died over the weekend as the result of fighting in Syrias Idlib, Hama and Aleppo provinces, Haq said.

Haq explained that two United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) facilities providing support to women and children in northern Syria are now out of service as a result of of the rising hostilities and attacks in the area.

In addition, Haq said local authorities have reported that all school activities have been suspended in Idlib for three days.

The Idlib province was seized by the Jabhat Fatah al Sham terror group (outlawed in Russia) in 2015. The province is now home to numerous Islamic extremists fighting the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad. Many of the extremists had surrendered during the fighting in the city of Aleppo and in the Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta, and were allowed to leave for Idlib.
