Trump May Make Legal Immigrants Choose US Federal Programs or Legal Status - Rights Group

The administration of US President Donald Trump may adopt a new rule that would prevent legal immigrants to the United States to renew their visas or obtain permanent residence if they have used certain federal programs, New York Immigration Coalition Executive Director Steven Choi said in a statement on Monday.

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) The administration of US President Donald Trump may adopt a new rule that would prevent legal immigrants to the United States to renew their visas or obtain permanent residence if they have used certain Federal programs, New York Immigration Coalition Executive Director Steven Choi said in a statement on Monday.

"Trump could inflict widespread suffering upon immigrant families, forcing an impossible choice between legal status and the safety and well-being of their loved ones," Choi said. "Under the pending rule change, infants could go hungry, children could lose their health insurance and immigrant families could struggle to heat their homes and keep a roof over their heads."

Earlier on Monday, the New York Immigration Coalition briefed reporters on the potential new rule that could make immigrant families choose between using public health, food and housing programs versus maintaining their legal status in the United States.

The rule has not yet been officially proposed, according to the press release, and no changes to the existing guidelines are under consideration at the Department of Homeland Security.
