Iran Supreme Leader Says Tehran Neither to Go to War, Nor Negotiate With US

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei ruled out on Monday the possibility of either waging a war or engaging in negotiations with the United States amid escalated Tehran-Washington tensions.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei ruled out on Monday the possibility of either waging a war or engaging in negotiations with the United States amid escalated Tehran-Washington tensions.

Since the United States withdrew in May from the Iran nuclear deal and announced re-impositions of anti-Iranian sanctions, the two countries' officials repeatedly exchanged rants threatening of consequences of going to war. US President Donald Trump said in late July, however, that he would meet with Iranian leaders without preconditions "whenever they want."

"Recently, US officials have been talking blatantly about us. Beside sanctions, they are talking about war and negotiations. In this regard, let me say a few words to the people: THERE WILL BE NO WAR, NOR WILL WE NEGOTIATE WITH THE US," Khamenei tweeted.

Tehran claims that in order to pave way for talks with Iran, the United States should return to the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which envisioned lifting anti-Iranian sanctions in exchange for Tehran maintaining peaceful nature of its nuclear program. Other signatories to the deal, including China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the European Union, have agreed that the agreement needs to be preserved.
