Self-proclaimed religious scholar issuing Fatwas unacceptable: CJP on Aamir Liaquat's hate speech case

Asks Aamir Liaquat to appear before the court

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 8th August, 2018) A hearing on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA-elect and tv host Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s hate speech on TV was held in the Supreme Court today.

“People do not accept somebody issuing Fatwas, declaring themselves as a religious scholar,” the chief justice said.

During the hearing, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar asked Aamir Liaquat’s counsel that his client should have attended the hearing.

The CJP asked Liaquat’s lawyer to call his client by 1pm. “Call him till 1pm, we are here,” he said.

The CJP said that Liaquat’s arrest warrants should be issued.

In May, TV host Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain was banned for fueling sectarian debate during his Ramzan transmission.

People had criticized the TV host for fueling religious sentiments and sparking sectarian debate during his Ramzan show ‘Ramzan mein Bol’ on Bol TV.

Taking action over the content of the show, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banned Liaquat for 30 days under Section 27 of PEMRA Ordinance 2012.

Earlier in 2017, PEMRA banned airing of Aamir Liaquat's programme `Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga' by BOL news channel for hate speech. However the show was aired in defiance of PERMRA's orders.
