Caretaker govt amends PEMRA Ordinance over SC orders

Media commission case concluded after 6 years and 100 hearings

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 7th June, 2018) The caretaker government has amended the PEMRA Ordinance over the orders of Supreme Court, bringing an end to media commission case after 6 years and 100 hearings.

The chief Justice had issued the orders after yesterday’s hearing in the case.

The caretaker government has amended the PEMRA Ordinance over the orders of Supreme Court. Following the amendment, the Federal government will not be able to shut down any tv channel directly.

According to the amendment, federal government’s control over PEMRA is over, giving more powers to PEMRA chairman. The number of PEMRA members has been reduced from 11 to eight. Five out of the eight members will be non-governmental persons and three will be government officers.

Petitioner Hamid Mir had demanded amendment in Section 5 and 6 of PEMRA Laws. Hamid Mir asserted that the case should be concluded after the ordinance was issued while the counsel for Pakistan Broadcasting Association Aitzaz Ahsan also asked the chief justice to conclude the case. Accepting the appeal of the parties, the chief justice closed the media commission case.
