Supreme Court suspends Ishaq Dar’s Senatorship

If Dar is really sick, we will wait for his return to the country and pray for his recovery: CJP

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 8th May, 2018) The Supreme Court has suspended the Senate membership of former finance minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader Ishaq Dar.

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar asked during the hearing that where is Ishaq Dar. To this, Dar’s counsel responded that his client is ill and cannot appear before the court.

The lawyer also presented Dar’s medical report in the court. The chief justice said that he had called Dar in the court today. “Dar cannot be that sick, he always submits a medical report and pleads exemption from appearing before the court,” the CJP said. The court said that if Dar is really sick, we will wait for his return to the country and pray for his recovery. He would have to come one day. Following this, the court suspended Dar’s Senate membership.

The court adjourned the hearing till after Eid-ul-Fitr.

On April 24, the Supreme Court had directed former finance minister Senator Ishaq Dar to appear in person before it on May 8 in a case challenging his election as senator. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar assured Dar that the court would grant him protective bail for appearance. Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) leader Nawazish Pirzada had challenged the Lahore High Court's (LHC) verdict allowing Dar to submit nomination papers for the Senate election 2018.

During the course of proceedings, the CJP asked Dar's counsel Salman Aslam Butt about the whereabouts of his client and that when he would appear before the court. Aslam Butt informed the bench that Dar was ill and currently in London. He also submitted a medical report stating Dar's health condition. The court rejected the medical certificate, saying it would not issue a notice to Dar again.
