PMLN’s anti-judiciary campaign: LHC imposes ban on Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz’s speeches

Coverage of Nawaz and Maryam’s derogatory speeches banned for 15 days, PEMRA to monitor channels

Lahore (Pakistan Point News - 16th Apr, 2018) The Lahore High Court (LHC) has announced the ruling on the contempt of court cases against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz on Monday. A three-member bench headed by Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi heard the case. Announcing the verdict, the LHC has ordered to temporarily ban the coverage of Nawaz and Maryam’s derogatory statements against the judiciary. The court ordered the media houses not to air their statements for 15 days.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) will monitor all the channels in this regard. The speeches of the two PMLN leaders will not be broadcast without PEMRA’s check. PEMRA will also ensure that any record regarding contempt of court statements is not aired on tv channels for 15 days. Ordering the authority to strictly monitor the speeches of Nawaz and Maryam, the court ordered PEMRA to reserve a decision and submit a reply regarding respective petitions within 15 days. Over a dozen petitions were filed to impose a ban on the publishing and broadcasting of anti-judiciary speeches. Several PMLN leaders, including Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, were made a party in the petitions.
