Lahore, (Pakistan Point News – 16th September, 2016) : International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is being observed on Friday, 16 September. This year theme is 'Ozone and climate: Restored by a world united'. The day is mainly intended to spread awareness of depletion of Ozone Layer and search for solutions to preserve it. States were invited to devote the Day to promote activities in accordance with the objectives of the Protocol and its amendments.
The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet. World Ozone Day has been celebrated since 1994 and was established by the United Nations General Assembly. This designation was made on December 19, 1994, in commemoration of the date, in 1987, on which representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal and announced to the world that it was time to stop destroying the ozone layer and these countries signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The day was first celebrated on September 16, 1995.
