US, Iran agree to halt attacks, resume talks to salvage peace deal

Both US and Iran had reached an understanding to suspend military action and agreed to hold a new round of negotiations later this week

DOHA: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 29th, 2026) The United States and Iran have reportedly agreed to halt attacks against each other and resume diplomatic talks to salvage the peace deal, according to a senior US official cited by an American news website.

The report said both US and Iran had reached an understanding to suspend military action and agreed to hold a new round of negotiations later this week.

US and Iranian officials are expected to meet in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz dispute and explore diplomatic options to prevent further escalation.

Earlier, a senior Iranian official said Tehran had refused to participate in technical-level talks scheduled for Sunday, accusing the United States of violating the terms of a previous memorandum of understanding through its recent military strikes.

Separately, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it had launched retaliatory strikes on eight US military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait following recent American attacks on Iranian facilities.

According to Iran's state broadcaster, the IRGC said the operation involved ballistic missiles and drones and was carried out in response to US strikes on Iranian military sites in Sirik and Qeshm.

The IRGC described the operation as a demonstration of Iran's defensive capabilities and warned that continued hostilities could further destabilise the region.

There has been no immediate confirmation from US, Bahraini or Kuwaiti authorities regarding the IRGC's claims, which could not be independently verified.
