US strikes Iran after drone attack in Strait of Hormuz

Both sides accuse each other of ceasefire violations days after agreement in Switzerland

WASHINGTON/DUBAI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 27th, 2026) The United States carried out military strikes on Iran on Friday after an Iranian drone reportedly struck a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a fresh escalation in tensions between the two countries.

According to US Central Command, American aircraft targeted missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites in Iran. The command later released footage showing a large explosion and said the operation had been completed.

Iranian authorities reported that a projectile landed near a pier in the southern port city of
Sirik. Iranian naval officials said they responded by striking US military targets in the region, although no further details were provided regarding the locations or extent of the damage.

State media in Iran initially reported an explosion at the port of Sirik but later said the facility had not suffered damage and remained operational. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated that their navy had targeted sites used by US forces and warned that any additional attacks would trigger a broader response.

Iran also said the ceasefire arrangement reached last week gave it authority to regulate ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Officials claimed Iranian forces fired warning shots and missiles toward vessels that allegedly violated navigation rules in the strategic waterway.

Separate regional development

In a separate diplomatic development, Israel and Lebanon signed an agreement aimed at ending hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. The accord calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanese territory. Hezbollah, however, said it would not cooperate with the arrangement.

US Vice President JD Vance said Washington had upheld the ceasefire with Iran and warned that further violence would be met with a strong response.

Oil markets react

Oil prices declined ahead of the US strikes as tanker traffic resumed through the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Aramco also restarted crude loading operations at its Ras Tanura terminal.
