Sindh announces ban on pillion riding on Muharram 9th, 10th

Certain categories of individuals, however, will be exempted from restriction including children under 12 years of age, elderly citizens and accredited journalists

KARACHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 25th, 2025) The Sindh Home Department has announced a province-wide ban on pillion riding of motorcycles on the 9th and 10th of Muharram to maintain law and order during the holy month.

A formal notification was issued, stating that the ban will be enforced across Sindh on these two days. However, certain categories of individuals will be exempted from the restriction, including children under 12 years of age, elderly citizens, and accredited journalists.

The decision is part of the provincial government’s security measures during the first ten days of Muharram, a period marked by religious processions and gatherings.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has stated that the crescent for Muharram is likely to be sighted on Thursday, June 26. The first day of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic new year 1447 AH, is expected to fall on Friday, June 27.

According to SUPARCO, the new moon will be born on Tuesday, June 25 at 3:32 PM. On the evening of June 26, the moon will be approximately 28 hours and 15 minutes old, making it easily visible in clear weather conditions. The space agency added that coastal areas in Pakistan will have a 75-minute window between sunset and moonset, creating favorable conditions for moon sighting.

If the moon is sighted on June 26, the 9th of Muharram will be observed on Saturday, July 5, and the Day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) on Sunday, July 6.
