Technical glitch may be reason behind poor WhatsApp service in Pakistan: PTA

Many users in Pakistan report difficulties in sending and receiving media files, such as voice notes, photos, and videos, on the popular messaging application while using mobile networks.

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 23rd, 2024) Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) on Tuesday minimized the significance of the current problems with WhatsApp services.

The PTA said that a potential “technical glitch” might be a reason behind the poor WhatsApp service in the country.

On July 20, many users in Pakistan reported difficulties in sending and receiving media files, such as voice notes, photos, and videos, on the popular messaging application while using mobile networks.

The users complained about media files either taking too long to download or not downloading at all, with some receiving an error message from WhatsApp: “Couldn’t download document. Try again. If the problem keeps happening, try connecting to Wi-Fi.”

According to a 2024 report by the World Population Review, there are 52.3 million WhatsApp users in Pakistan.

The disruptions have continued for many users. In the past 24 hours, Downdetector, a global platform monitoring website and application issues, has reported ongoing outages of WhatsApp in Pakistan.

Private telecommunications services in the country have confirmed the issue.
