Punjab govt suspends Nawaz Sharif’s sentence in Al-Azizia reference

The sources say that the caretaker Punjab cabinet has suspended Nawaz Sharif's sentence under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedural Code.

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Oct 24th, 2023) The caretaker Punjab announced on Tuesday the suspension of the sentence previously given to former Prime Minister and PML-N Supreme leader Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference.

Nawaz Sharif had faced convictions in both the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references. The accountability court had sentenced him to 10 years in prison and imposed an eight million Pounds fine in the Avenfield case, along with a 7-year sentence in the Al-Azizia reference. Besides it, the court had barred Sharif from holding public office for a decade.

However, in 2019, Lahore High Court (LHC) suspended his sentence in the Al-Azizia reference on medical grounds, permitting him to travel to London for medical treatment.

Insiders familiar with the matter revealed that the interim Punjab cabinet suspended Nawaz Sharif's sentence under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedural Code.

Under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedural Code, the government retains the authority to suspend a convict's sentence.

Nawaz Sharif, who served as the country's prime minister on three occasions, returned to Pakistan on Saturday, ending his self-imposed exile of four years. His arrival was met with a warm reception by PML-N supporters, and he addressed a large gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan, unveiling his plans for leading Pakistan out of its current challenges.
