BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th May, 2021) The Belgian Prosecutor General's Office is investigating a major cyberattack, which targeted the parliament, educational institutions, and hospitals, a Prosecutor General's Office spokesman told reporters on Thursday.
The incident already forced the Belgian parliament to cancel several planned meetings, including on the human rights situation in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region after internet provider Belnet said it suffered a DDoS (denial-of-service) attack.
"The related appeal was received by the department for digital crime... The investigation should establish whether any data was stolen," the spokesperson was quoted as saying by the newspaper DH.
In the wake of the incident, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo declared additional funding in the 2021 budget for cybersecurity efforts.
