Dust Devils: A Summer Phenomenon Shaped by Surface Temperatures

Rafha, July (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز ‎‎‎ 20 يوليو 2026ء) Afaq Society for Astronomy member Burgis Al-Fulaih told the Saudi Press Agency these short-lived phenomena vary in size and intensity depending on terrain and soil conditions. They typically occur in the afternoon, when surface temperatures are highest, and weaken in the evening.

He said their frequency has declined in recent years due to improved vegetation cover through protected reserves, afforestation efforts, restrictions on illegal woodcutting, and better grazing management.

He also advised caution on open roads, in desert areas, and at outdoor sites, noting that although dust devils generally have a limited impact, they can temporarily reduce visibility, raise dust, and displace lightweight objects.
