Saudi Arabia Declared Free of African Horse Sickness by WOAH

Riyadh, August (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز ‎‎‎ 29 أغسطس 2025ء) The WOAH declaration is a significant leap forward for all horse-related activities and is the result of the Kingdom's continuous efforts to preserve and enhance animal health. It confirms the success of veterinary policies and prevention programs, particularly those implemented by the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa).

African horse sickness is a disease that can cause high mortality rates in horses, reaching up to 90% in some cases. Its transmission through insect vectors makes control challenging, requiring a coordinated effort. Weqaa has played a vital role by implementing integrated monitoring and prevention programs, by strengthening laboratory capacity for quick diagnosis, and by raising awareness among breeders and farmers.

This achievement not only protects livestock but also enhances the Kingdom's position as a safe destination for hosting equestrian sporting events. It reflects the success of the environmental, water, and agricultural sectors in improving animal health and demonstrates the Kingdom's commitment to global health and safety standards.
