MWL Secretary-General Launches First Forum for Fiqh Scholars in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, August (پاکستان پوائنٹ نیوز ‎‎‎ 28 أغسطس 2025ء) The forum, titled “Teaching Islamic Fiqh and Cultivating the Faqih: Guiding Principles and Frameworks,” brings together senior muftis and scholars of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) from across the Islamic world and countries with Muslim minorities. The forum is organized by the Islamic Fiqh Council within the MWL under the patronage of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Secretary-General of the Council of Senior Scholars in Saudi Arabia, member of the Islamic Fiqh Council, and Chairman of its Sharia committee Fahd bin Saad Al-Majid delivered a keynote speech on behalf of Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Chairman of Council of ‎Senior ‎Scholars, Head of the General ‎Presidency for ‎Scholarly ‎Research and Ift and President of the Islamic Fiqh Council Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Al-Sheikh.

“Fiqh is a precise and specialized field of knowledge,” the grand mufti’s speech emphasized, noting that the Islamic scholarly archive today boasts an unparalleled production of jurisprudential publications. The grand mufti expressed hope that the forum would produce studies and recommendations aimed at making this extensive body of fiqh knowledge more accessible to students of this field. He also emphasized the need to evaluate fiqh teaching curricula in universities across the Islamic world, with a focus on their ability to develop fiqh scholars who are capable of research, critical reasoning, and addressing contemporary issues.

The Grand Mufti extended his gratitude to the Islamic Fiqh Council, highlighting that Saudi Arabia has presented the MWL to the world to foster unity, build bonds of cordiality among Muslims, and address contemporary issues with sound and scholarly fiqh reasoning.

In his address, the MWL secretary-general welcomed the distinguished attendees, affirming that fiqh, throughout its rich history, has long served and continues to serve as the authoritative framework for understanding practical Islamic rulings derived from detailed sources. It guides Muslims in accordance with the principles of their Sharia, he added.

Al-Issa commended senior fiqh scholars of the ummah for their remarkable contributions to Islamic unity by reinforcing the bonds of knowledge and ethics among different fiqh schools. Their sincere intentions, tolerance, purity of heart, and deep knowledge earned them a respected place in the scholarly community, distinguished by the highest standards of Islamic ethics and conduct. This diversity of fiqh schools of thought, he said, became a source of intellectual enrichment, highlighting the Sharia’s breadth, flexibility, and harmony across times, places, and circumstances.

Al-Issa stressed that only those lacking knowledge and vision view this diversity with narrowness or discomfort. He cautioned against the dangers of those who merely memorize texts without comprehending their meanings and noble ethics, noting that they fail to grasp the vast grace of Allah, the tolerance of His Sharia, and the value of bringing together the hearts of Muslims through balancing benefits and harms.

Al-Issa underlined the importance of understanding diverse fiqh views and building bridges between Islamic schools of thought through dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect. Scholars of the ummah, he said, despite their varied opinions, are like bricks in a single structure that grows in beauty and strength through its diversity and integration.
