UN Refugee Chief to Visit Rohingya During Myanmar Visit

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi began a working trip to Myanmar on Monday, during which he will visit the Rakhine State, home to the persecuted Rohingya minority

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi began a working trip to Myanmar on Monday, during which he will visit the Rakhine State, home to the persecuted Rohingya minority.

"The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, began his five-day visit to Myanmar this morning. Grandi is scheduled to spend the first two days in Myanmar's Rakhine State where he will visit communities in Sittwe," the UN refugee agency said in a statement.

Later in the week, Grandi will go to the capital of Nay Pyi Taw for talks with Myanmar's senior government officials.

"In the course of his stay in Myanmar, Grandi will follow up on a range of issues raised by refugees from Myanmar and will discuss Myanmar's efforts to find comprehensive and durable solutions to the crisis in Rakhine State," the statement continued.

The visit comes on the heels of the UN high commissioner's mission to Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh last month. Over 900,000 stateless Rohingya currently live in the crowded settlements there, of whom 741,000 have fled Myanmar since government crackdown in August 2017.
