German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday congratulated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on his swearing-in, her spokeswoman said
BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday congratulated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on his swearing-in, her spokeswoman said.
The 41-year-old was inaugurated in Kiev earlier in the day after winning the election by a landslide on April 21. He immediately called for a snap parliamentary vote.
"Today being [Zelenskiy's] inauguration day, let me say that the chancellor congratulates Mr. Zelenskiy on his taking the office of Ukraine's president," Martina Fietz told reporters.
She went on to describe the relationship between the two nations as very close and promised German support of Ukraine's reforms, sovereignty and its territorial integrity. Fietz added that Merkel could not attend the inaugural ceremony due to a busy schedule.
