AGP Anwar Mansoor Khan resigns from his office

The top law officer says that he has resigned from his office on demand of Pakistan Bar Council.

ISLAMABAD: (Urdu Point/Pakistan Point News-Feb 20, 2020) Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Anwar Mansoor Khan has resigned from his office, the reports say here on Thursday.

According to the sources, AGP Anwar Mansoor Khan has sent his resignation to President Arif Alvi.

“I’m giving resign on demand of Pakistan Bar Council,” Anwar Mansoor Khan was quoted by a tv as saying.

On Wednesday, the top law officer Khan had told the Supreme court that some judges of the apex court had also been involved in helping write a rejoinder in a reference case against Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court.

Federal Law Minister Farogh Naseem said that the statement made by AGP before the SC had nothing to do with the government. The AGP made this statement by his own. He also made it clear that AGP Anwar Mansoor did not resign rather he was asked to resign from the office.

Senior journalist Hamid Mir has asked the government to withdraw the reference against SC Judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa to save its own face.

The government filed reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa and accused that the judge had not declared his family members foreign assets in his wealth statement and thus committed misconduct. Justice Isa was also accused of acquiring three properties in London on lease in the name of his wife and children between 2011 and 2015.

The Supreme Judicial Council, the constitutional body that hears complaints against judges, started proceedings on basis of the reference. The proceeding was later challenged by a number of petitioners including Justice Isa.

Advocate Muneer A Malik—the counsel of Justice Qazi Fae Isa, argued that the chairman of the Asset Recovery Unit and Law Minister Farogh Naseem did not have the authority to investigate a judge of higher judiciary. He stated in his client’s case, material was collected through state detectives that could not be considered acceptable.
