Saudi Arabia Announces Taking Command of Coalition Troops in Yemen

The Saudi-led coalition of Arab states will reposition its troops in Yemen's southern city of Aden, where the Yemeni government has been temporarily based since 2014, and move them under the command of Saudi Arabia as required under the "current operational tasks," the Saudi Foreign Ministry said on Sunday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th October, 2019) The Saudi-led coalition of Arab states will reposition its troops in Yemen's southern city of Aden, where the Yemeni government has been temporarily based since 2014, and move them under the command of Saudi Arabia as required under the "current operational tasks," the Saudi Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper claimed in a report, citing informed Saudi sources, that the Yemeni government and the separatist Southern Transitional Council of Yemen (STC) reached a Saudi-brokered agreement to be signed soon in Riyadh.

"The Coalition Command announced the realignment of the coalition troops in Aden to be transferred under the command of the Kingdom [of Saudi Arabia] and be redeployed in line with the requirements of the current operations," the ministry said on Twitter.

In the same thread, the ministry expressed appreciation of efforts by all forces, especially those of the United Arab Emirates, and stressed that they contributed to the success of the plans for the "implementation of the current operational tasks."

In 1990, the southern Democratic Republic of Yemen and the northern Yemen Arab Republic united into what today is Yemen. The south has been since seeking secession. The STC was established in 2017. The military confrontation between the south and north has been ongoing in parallel with the civil conflict between the government forces and the Houthi militia. Since 2015, the Saudi-led coalition joined the military action on the side of Yemeni President Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi's forces.
