BAKU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2019) Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will meet with his Armenian counterpart, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, in New York on September 23 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, a spokeswoman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Sputnik Friday.

"Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will meet with co-chairs of [Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe] OSCE Minsk Group in New York on September 22. On the next day, on September 23, Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers are expected to meet with the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs mediating," Leyla Abdullayeva said.

The OSCE Minsk group, co-chaired by France, Russia and the United States, was set up in 1992 to help settle the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Armenian-Azerbaijani relations have been strained since 1991, when the region, with its predominantly Armenian population, announced its independence from Azerbaijan. A military conflict followed the announcement. A ceasefire was achieved in 1994, but there have still been spikes in tensions since then.
