New York Times Says Resident Correspondent Banned From Reporting In Iran

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th June, 2019) The New York times said in a press release on Monday that its correspondent in Iran has been prohibited from working for the past four months as his press credential has been revoked.

"The correspondent, Thomas Erdbrink, a Netherlands citizen, has reported for The Times from Iran since 2012," the release said. "He resides in Tehran but has been unable to work since late February, when his press credential was revoked."

The newspaper decided to make the issue public after recent speculation and comments on social media, where Erdbrink's absence became increasingly conspicuous because of escalating tensions between the Iranian authorities and the United States, the release said.

Officials of Iran's Foreign Ministry have repeatedly assured the newspaper that Erdbrink's credential would soon be restored, but have offered no explanation for the delays or for why it was revoked, New York Times International Editor Michael Slackman said.

Slackman added that there are some indications the issue will be resolved soon.
