Modi requests Pakistan to use its airspace to travel to Bishkek

Modi will be attending the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 8th June, 2019) The Indian government has requested Pakistan to allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft to fly over Pakistani airspace on June 13.

According to media reports, India has sent a formal request in writing in this regard.

Modi will be attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Media reports added that Pakistan is considering India’s request.

Meanwhile, no meeting has been arranged between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Indian premier Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the SCO in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek.

India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed rivals, have never been close In February, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced closure of the country's airspace for commercial flights. The decision was taken after the Pakistani army downed two Indian military jets that had crossed the Line of Control in disputed Kashmir region.

Pakistan has extended the ban until June 14.

In a rare exception, Pakistan had allowed Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to fly directly over Pakistani airspace while on her way to the SCO meeting.

Relations between India and Pakistan have taken a turn for the worst earlier this year. Tensions soared after a deadly attack in Kashmir on February 14, when a suicide bomber attacked an Indian security convoy, killing over 40 personnel. The attack was later claimed by Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed. The tragedy led to heightened tensions between the two South Asian neighbors and air raids exchange.
