ST. PETERSBURG (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th June, 2019) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan did not discuss extensively the Nagorno-Karabakh problem during their Thursday meeting, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

"The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was not discussed in detail. Yesterday's conversation ... touched upon bilateral relations and various aspects of trade and economic cooperation [between the countries]," the spokesman told reporters said on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Nagorno-Karabakh proclaimed independence in 1991, which was followed by a bloody three-year war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The region is officially viewed as Azerbaijani territory. The pressure in the area continues resulting in occasional violence. An escalation of tensions in the region took place in early April 2016.

In late March, Pashinyan had his first official meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev agreed to continue direct dialogue on the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.
