EU Does Not Share US Threat Assessment on Huawei - Senior European Commission Official

The European Union is not accepting unconditionally the United States' efforts to freeze out China's high tech giant Huawei Corporation as a strategic threat, European Commission Representative to the EU Political and Security Committee Diego de Ojeda said on Thursday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th June, 2019) The European Union is not accepting unconditionally the United States' efforts to freeze out China's high tech giant Huawei Corporation as a strategic threat, European Commission Representative to the EU Political and Security Committee Diego de Ojeda said on Thursday.

"When it comes to 5G, I'm not sure our threat assessment is identical to that of the United States," de Ojeda told the EU and Foreign Policy Defense Forum.

The White House has been lobbying its European allies against granting Huawei access to its networks, claiming the Chinese government wields significant control over the company, despite its denials.

US President Donald Trump reportedly told outgoing UK Prime Minister Theresa May on his state visit to the United Kingdom this week that Washington will stop sharing intelligence with London unless it scraps plans to allow Huawei to build a 5G mobile phone network.

The US Department of Commerce blacklisted Huawei Technologies and around 70 of its affiliates in May, banning them from buying equipment from US partners without a government go-ahead.

Huawei has repeatedly rejected US intelligence agencies' accusations that it allegedly installs "backdoor" access in its devices at the behest of the Chinese government in order to help Beijing spy on users.
