EU Council Asks Member States To Do More To Prevent Radicalization In Prisons

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th June, 2019) The Council of the European Union warned member states on Thursday that more "specialized interventions" were needed to combat radicalization in prisons.

"The Council today adopted conclusions on preventing and combatting radicalisation in prisons, and on dealing with terrorist and violent extremist offenders after release. The Council highlighted the importance and urgency of effective measures in this area, given the risk posed by the growing number of terrorist offenders and offenders radicalised while in prison, and the fact that a number of them will be released in the next two years," the council said in a press release.

The council published a list of advisable ways of dealing with terrorist and extremist offenders while in jail and after their release, considering that a number of them will be freed in the next two years.

The council suggested encouraging inmates to quit extremist activities, implementing measures for those who pose a threat and monitor them after release.

Member countries, it said, should also train prison and probation staff to counteract radicalization and exchange information and good practices with each other.

Thousands of EU nationals left for Syria and Iraq at the height of Islamist reach and started returning in the past few years. Many foreign fighters were jailed upon arrival and are known to radicalize other inmates.
