ST. PETERSBURG (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th June, 2019) Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom expects freight traffic through the Russian Northern Sea Route (NSR) to reach from 27 to 30 millions tonnes in 2019, Vyacheslav Ruksha, the deputy director of Rosatom and the head for the company's NSR directorate, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"I believe it will reach 27-28 [million tonnes] or maybe even 30 [million tonnes]. Everything will depend on how fast cargo of the Arctic LNG [liquefied natural gas] 2 project will be delivered," Ruksha said.

The NSR is the main Russian Arctic shipping path and the shortest maritime passage between the Far Eastern and the European part of the country. It is supposed to have an annual freight traffic of 80 million tonnes by 2024.
