UNGA's 74th Session To Focus On 2030 Agenda For Sustainable Development - Nigeria's Envoy

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th June, 2019) The 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) will focus on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including promoting security, combating poverty, hunger and advancing quality education, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the organization Tijjani Mohammad Bande told reporters on Tuesday.

"The priorities... deal with normal questions of peace and security, climate action and the implementation of the SDGs [Sustainable Development Goals], in particular, poverty eradication, zero hunger and quality education," Bande, who earlier in the day was chosen to be the next UNGA president, said.

The next UNGA president pointed out that his office would address these questions through the inclusion of women and youth and the respect of human rights.

"We are dealing with this through the freedom of inclusion, particularly, of women and youth, and with the respect of rights as well," he said.

The SDGs are part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted in 2015. The SDGs address key global challenges related to poverty, climate, prosperity, inequality and environmental degradation.

The 193-member General Assembly will open its 74th session on September 17. Cabo Verde, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Croatia, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Malta and Turkey will serve as vice presidents of the 74th session.
