UN General Assembly Elects Nigerian Envoy Bande as Its Next President - General-Secretary

The UN General Assembly selected Nigeria's Ambassador to the United Nations Tijjani Mohammad Bande as its next president, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th June, 2019) The UN General Assembly selected Nigeria's Ambassador to the United Nations Tijjani Mohammad Bande as its next president, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday.

"It is my pleasure to congratulate Professor Tijjani Mohammad Bande as president of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly," Guterres said. "We wish you well in your preparations for this role in the months ahead."

Guterres said Bande will preside over the General Assembly during a number of significant conferences, including the Climate Action Summit set to take place on September 23, the Sustainable Development Goals summit on September 24-25 as well as the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.

In addition, 21 vice-presidents of the upcoming UN General Assembly session were also elected - representing six African states, five Asian states, three Latin American states, three European states and five UN Security Council permanent member states.

The 193-member General Assembly will open its 74th session on September 17. Ethiopia, Tunisia, Indonesia, Oman, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Croatia, Argentina, Malta and Turkey will serve as vice presidents of the 74th session.
