Asif Zardari avoids arrest as interim bail extended for 10 days

Asif Zardari’s pre-arrest bail has been extended till June 10.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 30th May, 2019) Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has once again avoided arrest as his interim bail has been extended.

A Islamabad High Court (IHC) divisional bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani held the hearing of the fake accounts case against the former president.

The IHC has extended former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur's interim bail in June 10 in references pertaining to mega money laundering through fake bank accounts.

The IHC has stopped the anti-graft body from arresting the accused.

A special alert was issued to the Islamabad police over his possible arrest while armoured vehicles were placed at the parking of the court.

Police were directed to maintain law and order in case of his arrest which has now been avoided.

Asif Ali Zardari was issued another notice to turn up at NAB old headquarters in Rawalpindi today for investigation into his alleged role in overvaluation of power projects and illegal awards of contracts.

However, judge Arshad Malik was on leave as he is on Umrah so the NAB proceedings has been delayed till June 14.

Following this, Asif Zardari appeared at the IHC in the fake accounts case from where he is expected to be arrested.

On May 9, the NAB had summoned him to record his statement in the fake accounts case; however he had excused himself from appearing before the CIT, and sought another date on the grounds that he was scheduled to appear before an accountability court in Islamabad on the same day.

The NAB has already filed references in money laundering through fake bank accounts, Pink Residency and illegal award of water supply schemes against him.

On April 13, Zardari had submitted his written response to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi on 54 questions in connection with three cases against him, including Park Lane Estate, Pink Residency, and fake accounts and money laundering.

Earlier, the case was being heard in a banking court in Karachi but had been shifted to an accountability court in Islamabad upon an appeal by the anti-corruption watchdog.

Asif Zardari had challenged decision of transferring fake bank accounts case from banking court Karachi to accountability court in Islamabad.
