Pompeo Undecided On Renewing Iraq's Waiver For Iranian Energy Imports - State Dept.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th May, 2019) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has not yet made a decision on whether to renew a waiver allowing Iraq to import electricity from Iran, Department of State spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a press briefing on Wednesday.

"The secretary has not made a decision on this yet," Ortagus told reporters.

Iraq's current waiver from the United States is set to end on June 16.

Iraq relies heavily on Iranian gas to feed its power grid. According to Iraq's Electricity Ministry, halting Iranian gas imports could cost Baghdad 4,000 megawatts per day. The ministry's spokesman has emphasized that Iraq does not have any alternatives to replace Iran's gas imports.
