Indian President Ram Nath Kovind has signed an order dissolving the Lok Sabha, the country's lower house, after its term expired and the nation held its month-long general election, the president's press service said on Saturday

NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th May, 2019) Indian President Ram Nath Kovind has signed an order dissolving the Lok Sabha, the country's lower house, after its term expired and the nation held its month-long general election, the president's press service said on Saturday.

"The Cabinet in its meeting held on 24.05.2019 has advised The President to dissolve the 16th Lok Sabha with immediate effect. The President has accepted the advice of the Cabinet on 24.05.2019 and signed the Order dissolving the 16th Lok Sabha," the press service said.

The new parliament is expected to convene in early June. Next week, the election's winner, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will announce their proposals on the new government's composition.

India's general election was held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, with over 900,000 million people having gone to the polls.

According to the preliminary results, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition, led by Modi's BJP, has surpassed the 272-mandate threshold needed for winning general election.

The NDA is projected to win some 340 of the parliament's 542 seats. The United Progressive Alliance, led by the main opposition National Congress party, is expected to secure about 90 seats.
