UK Lawmaker Says New Brexit Referendum Seems Likely After May's Resignation Announcement

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th May, 2019) Dirk Hazell, the leader of the UK arm of the European People's Party (EPP), told Sputnik on Friday that, following Prime Minister Theresa May's resignation announcement, the United Kingdom would probably need to hold a second referendum on the EU membership.

May announced earlier in the day that she would step down as the leader of the Conservative Party on June 7.

"She has no choice and is substantially the author of her own misfortune. There will probably need to be a general election in due course and a further referendum on EU membership. The one redeeming feature of her premiership is that, despite her efforts, the United Kingdom is still in the European Union," Hazell said.

The UK prime minister said in her resignation speech that she would always regret her failure to deliver Brexit.

May has been under pressure to step down after a backlash from her cabinet against the latest draft of her Brexit plan. UK lawmakers have rejected May's withdrawal agreement, negotiated with Brussels, three times.
